October 1912 All-Story Headlines
Burroughs-Themed Auction Offerings
Heritage Auction Galleries is offering a large selection of Edgar Rice Burroughs pulps and memorabilia in their August 2-4 Comic and Comic Art auction, to be held at Geppi's Entertainment Museum in Baltimore, MD.

The highlight is the October 1912 All-Story with Tarzan's first appearance in any medium, a copy in GD/VG condition from the collection of well-known Burroughs expert Robert Zeuschner.

Plus, a First Edition Hardback of Tarzan of the Apes (McClurg, 1914). About a yearand-a-half after his debut in the pages of The All-Story, Tarzan’s first appearance was reprinted in hardback form -- the first hardback Edgar Rice Burroughs ever published.

This is a first state, first edition copy of the book, one of only 5,000 printed in that initial run. It lacks the acorn device on the spine and bears "W. F. Hall" on the copyright page in Old English script, marking it as a true first edition. The book is bound in dark red cloth with gold lettering, and is in great condition, with tight binding, off-white pages, and mild to moderate amount of shelfwear and corner bumping. The dustjacket has been repaired, and the extensive restoration includes two major tear seals and multiple pieces added. A beautiful book.

Also on offer: many more issues of All-Story as well as hard-to-find issues of Blue Book, Amazing Stories, and others. Many of these are from Dr. Zeuschner's collection.

Wherever possible, complete serials are being sold together as a single lot. In addition to the sought-after Tarzan serials, the likes of "Gods of Mars," Westerns like "War Chief" and "Apache Devil," the Pellucidar series, and many more are included.

Other lots of interest to the Burroughs collector:
• The original art for a spectacular 1935 Tarzan Sunday strip by Hal Foster
• An equally impressive 1940 Tarzan Sunday strip by Burne Hogarth, as well as Tarzan art by Bob Lubbers, John Celardo, and others
• A signed letter from Burroughs to his daughter Joan
• Early comic book appearances of Tarzan like the 1938 Comics on Parade #1
• A complete Parker Bros. Tarzan board game from the 1930s
• Tarzan ephemera such as rare store signs, posters, and much more

Heritage has agreed to a special catalog offer for readers of this publication: a complimentary copy of the full-color catalog (which normally sells for $50) is available by registering online at the address HA.com/BURB726O or calling 866-835-3243 and mentioning reference #BURB726O.

DUM-DUM NOTES
We regret to report that Eve Brent will not be able to attend the Dum-Dum because of ill health, but she will send a memoir on Tarzan actor Gordon Scott which will be read at the annual dinner by Sky Brower, operator of the Tarzan website. Sky will also read a testimony by one of Gordon Scott’s other leading ladies, Sara Shane, who appeared with him in Tarzan’s Greatest Adventure (1959), and now lives in Australia.

We published the wrong phone number for making room reservations at the Galt House Hotel in a previous issue of the newsletter. It should be (502) 589-5200 (their toll free number is 1-800-THE GALT [843-4258]).

See you at the Dum-Dum!
