ERB Collector Presents Who’s Who Behind the Comics DARK HORSE I Compiled by Bill Ross and Inspired by Larry Burrows An ERBapa Reprint: |
This issue of Who’s Who Behind the Comics is the first of a series examining the Edgar Rice Burroughs comic book output of Dark Horse Comics, Inc. Approximately two years after Semic International with Malibu Comics ceased production of its Tarzan comic Dark Horse Comics, Inc. took up the mantle. Again Edgar Rice Burroughs fans had high hopes, and again, except for a few highlights, those hopes were dashed. Poor scripts and poor artwork was the rule rather than the exception. For seven years and a little over fifty books (and several graphic novels) Dark Horse created and adapted numerous short run stories. The first two installments examine the short run series (you know the type: one of …). Installment III will examine the Tarzan series of numbers one through twenty.
June 6, 1995 was the lay-down date of Dark Horses first Burroughs related comic book. It was a one shot issue featuring a story carried over from Semic International. At the end of 1999 another carry-over from Semic International was begun. “Tarzan and the Rivers of Blood” was to be an eight issue series, but only lasted four issues.
Of the issues covered in the first two installments Tarzan was teamed-up with: John Carter, the Predator, Batman and Superman, and Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan fans were not pleased with the results. However, there were several gems: Tom Yeates’ adaptation of “The Return of Tarzan” and Allan Gross’ script with Mike Grell illustrations for “Tarzan: The Savage Heart.”
