The Many Worlds of
THE
DUANE ADAMS
ERB GALLERY
IntroductionI have been a Burroughs fan since childhood. Only recently has my involvement dealt with producing art dealing with the works of ERB. It started with some drawings for David (Nkima) Adams' ERBapa articles. Next I was doing some drawings for myself. A few of these you will find below at this site. I was then asked to do the Burroughs Empire Medal. Since then I have done some drawings for Jeff (Elmo) Long's "The Princess of Jasoom" and for a few of the chapter summaries on Tangor's site. I am a relatively new member of ERBapa so I have been drawing for my own articles.

ERB
Pen and ink drawing
(color added by computer)
I was doing a number of pen and ink drawings for my first ERBapa article when I did this drawing. It was not meant specifically for the article nor for anything in particular - just messing around with the brush. I do like doing silhouettes. It was done very quickly. It was included in my ERBapa article only because I had room at the end of the page.
MOVIE TARZANS
Pen and ink drawingThis was made before the Iowa Dum-Dum. I was reading Gabe Esso's "Tarzan of the Movies" at the time. So I decided to try and do all of the movie Tarzans gathered around THE creator. I started with ERB in the middle and began placing the film actors on either side, but I ran out of room so I did not include all of them. left to right: Buster Crabbe, Frank Merrill, James H. Pierce, P. Dempsey Tabler, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Elmo Lincoln, Gene Pollar, Johnny Weissmuller, Glenn Morris.
TARZAN SHOOTS GORO
Colored pencil drawingI had just done a large pen and ink drawing of the famous scene from "Jungle Tales of Tarzan" of the young Tarzan firing an arrow at the moon. The idea of doing the same thing in color appealed to me. The color version is the same basic concept of a slight diagonal composition from lower left to the upper right. The arrow, barely visible, helps the viewers eye travel from the figure of Tarzan toward it's goal of the moon.
JOHN CARTER OF MARS
Colored pencil drawingThis drawing was done right before the Iowa Dum-Dum. I had no specific scene in mind. It was a drawing to emphasis the other worldliness of the Barsoomian saga and John Carter. Composed with a heavy diagonal feel, JC stands on the red planet with the twin moons, Thuria and Cluros, exaggerated in size to highlight the figure of John Carter.
JOHN CARTER FIGHTING A GREEN MARTIAN
Colored pencil drawingThis drawing was done about the same time as the 'John Carter of Mars' drawing. Again, it was not from any specific scene in particular. It was my rendition of any numerous encounters JC had fighting the gigantic Barsoomian green men.
BOLGANI WARRIOR
Colored pencil drawingThis image came to me as I was reading "Tarzan and the Golden Lion." I was struck by the descriptions of the bolgani as they terrorized the area. The idea of jewel encrusted ornaments on such massive creatures had to be put down visually. I did take artistic license to leave out some of the decorative feathers that ERB mentioned in the description.
THE RATNAZ FILE LOGO
Pen and ink drawingBill Hillman asked me to come up with a logo for the Ratnaz file some time back. Since the file is a parody of the works of ERB, I thought it only fitting that I parody the Burroughs Bibliophiles logo. The Ratnaz File was done in the same style of lettering as the original logo. Most of the scene remained the same with slight variations. But of course, the biggy was to replace Tarzan with Bill and to replace the John Carter figure with Bill's partner in the Ratnaz saga with Tangor, Bruce Bozarth.

ConclusionI am grateful to Bill Hillman for making this site available, and for all the work he has done in preparation for it. Hopefully we can add more pictures to this in the future. I welcome any comments or suggestion. Please feel free to contact me at: e-mail address: dadams@netins.net
