Danton's Ex-Libris created by Thomas Yeates Click for full screen image |
First off I just can't believe he's gone. We had been in touch quite a bit recently and I just can't believe he's suddenly gone. He has left a huge hole in my heart. What a great sweet lovable guy. I am so sad.The last time I was there he generously treated my family and another couple we were traveling with to a wonderful evening at the office and his favorite restaurant. Our trip to his house a few days later was still mind boggling despite the fact that I'd been there many times before. While there I spotted the most beautiful photo of Maureen O'Sullivan I'd ever seen, signed of course, and was happy it got into David Fury's book. I also saw a pile of Ed's illustrated letters to various publications. The ones I read were short hilarous anecdotes with great little cartoons. There was a whole pile of them on a table in the room on the left as you walked into the downstairs from outside. I hope they weren't burned, but I'm afraid the fire was in that very room.
He took on the role of the keeper of the archives and when some of them went up in flames he must have just felt terrible, I think it must have broken his heart.
I always figured that he wouldn't make it to old age, but he seemed so up and energetic the last time I spoke with him last month that his sudden end came as a real shock. I just loved that he'd become Chairman of the Board, and he was so proud when he told me. He was a great friend to me and always championed my work. He asked me long ago to do him an ex-libris bookplate, I'm so glad that I finally got it to him last year.
Thank you Bill and Sue-On for all you do for ERB and all you did and continue to do for Danton.
