As a small boy, I used to hurry downstairs every Sunday morning to spread out the Roto Gravure section on our floor to pore over the latest Prince Valiant comic strip adventure. I was too young to read the story but the illustrations said it all. Brave Knights, ferocious Vikings and plenty of sorcery. My father was a helper on a beer truck and my mom scrubbed the floors of a local restaurant. None of the parents in my neighborhood had jobs that were much better, so I was mesmerized by the fact that somewhere in the world a man was being paid to tell stories with his beautiful illustrations. That was for me! A couple of dozen years ago I picked up a book at a flea market for about three bucks called Prince Valiant. It was a reprint of the first three years of the Prince Valiant saga by Hal Foster. About a half dozen years ago or so I decided to try my hand at illustrating
Foster's masterpiece with my own visions using his own text, starting from
the beginning. He had started out doing a full twelve panels per
page. In those days, he actually got a whole page to display his
strip. I based my experiment on today's page layout, which would
only allow for six panels, so the first two week installments were divided
into four weeks. That's as far as I took it but I think the result
was pretty good. I even attempted to keep a Hal Foster "look" to
my own work.
