by L. Ron Hubbard Although now acknowledged as a fully vibrant force in popular American literature, the pulps were not infrequently maligned in their day. Charges included stock plots, dull renditions, extraneous violence and unabashed sensationalism – all of which was true, to a point. By the same token, however, those rough-cut and lurid-covered pulps also launched the likes of Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler and many anothers [Edgar Rice Burroughs] who would finally prove just as integral to the shaping of American fiction as a Mark Twain or Ernest Hemingway. Then, too, and even more to the point of an L. Ron Hubbard, virtually all we know of modern speculative fiction arguably emerged from the pulps. In answer to the many critics of pulp fiction, Scientology
founder, L. Ron Hubbard presented a spirited defence of the genre in what
was intended as a "letter to the editor." The text of this defence was

LIN CARTER SITES ON THE WEB
"Carter tried his hand at every type of fantasy story that he enjoyed, including straight science fiction. His Callisto series is a tribute to Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter of Mars (Barsoom) books. His Green Star Saga harkens back to Carson Napier of Venus--also a Burroughs creation. He also wrote several quasi-Pellucidarian novels with titles like JOURNEY TO THE UNDERGROUND WORLD and HUROK OF THE STONE AGE. "3. Other Lin Carter sites in ERBzine

The Ask Dr. Science Web Site is the home of America's foremost authoritarian on the world around us. Or at least the world around him. "There is a thin line between ignorance and arrogance," he says, "and only I have managed to erase that line." How does Dr. Science know the secrets of the universe? He has a Masters Degree ... in Science!Dr. Science answers questions that other scientists would only laugh at: why the sky is blue, driving on parkways, woodchucks, the color of belly button lint, morning erections, disappearing dark, chewing gum on bedposts, draining bathtubs at the equator, tire wear, men's nipples, and chickens. But now, at last, he has tackled a question that many ERB fans have been asking.
Whatever happened to Bonzo the Chimp? Have you been using him in your experiments?
Submitted by Mark from A Smaller City Connecticut USAAfter his motion picture career with Ronald Regan, Bonzo the Chimp went on to a successful career in Real Estate development. In fact, he was responsible for turning former citrus orchards into what is now known as Tarzana, California. Naming a suburb after his old pal Tarzan proved a stroke of genius, because many homeowners were willing to pay top dollar for a split-level ranch home decorated in a jungle theme, and who better to hire as a interior design consultant than a bona fide chimpanzee? Of course, nowadays the word "jungle" has been replaced by the more PC "rainforest", but interest in the tropics in still hot, especially in fast-growing Las Vegas, where Bonzo now occupies an important position in City Government.
Submitted by Bob Zeuschner This is one of the boxes presented to Academy Screeners by the Disney Studios. I don't know what was in there... ...but it worked. Congrats, Phil... and Ed. |
