Introduction by David Lemmo
It all starts with Ralph Brown.  Ralph approached David Lemmo with the idea of a Northern California chapter of the Burroughs Bibliophiles.  David was more than enthusiastic about the idea, and of having a Tarzan Centennial program of some kind.  Ralph put him in contact with Tom Tolley, Sacramento Central Library rare books technician, Richard A. Lupoff, artist Thomas Yeates, and Professor Tom Krabacher of California State University, Sacramento.  More people joined, and we all agreed on the name Northern California Mangani.

David created a Northern California Mangani page on his Museum of Modern Mythology and Pop Culture website, which has recorded the activities that led to the two day Tarzan Program, and month-and-a-half Tarzan memorabilia exhibits at the Central Library.  Our membership: Ralph Brown, Kathleen Brown, Tom Tolley, Thomas Yeates, Tom Krabacher, Richard and Patricia Lupoff, John and Paula Pappas, Rachael Wenban, David Lemmo, Duane Covey, Don Gray, and Steven Baran.  Richard Lupoff and Thomas Yeates are already enthusiastic about doing another program in 2013, and we're throwing ideas around.

in the upstairs Sacramento Room.
The first editions and the pulp magazines shown are
from David Lemmo's Museum collection,
the rest of the items are Ralph Brown's.

This ended the Saturday day of events.

..
.
Sunday morning, David, the Lupoffs and John and Paula Pappas
arrived at the Central Library before the start of the program.
.

.

Tom Tolley kicks off the day's events,
as he did on Saturday,
with an introductory talk on
Burroughs, Tarzan, and the centennial.
.
.
.

Artist Thomas Yeates, and his ERB artwork through the years,
was the subject of a slideshow/lecture.
Thomas went through the arc of his career as an artist,
emphasizing the work he did on Tarzan projects.
He also talked about how he began drawing as a child, kept at it,
studied under the legendary Joe Kubert himself,
and is now the artist for the Prince Valiant newspaper comic-strip.
.

.
Ralph Brown did a slideshow/lecture on the various Tarzan toy merchandise (the "doo-dads").
Ralph has one of the most incredible collections of Tarzaniana in existence.
He is also the original catalyst of these two days of events.
Ralph approached David Lemmo with the idea of forming a Northern California chapter of
the Burroughs Bibliophiles, and directed him to Tom Tolley at the Sacramento Central Library,
Richard and Patricia Lupoff, Thomas Yeats, and others.

and here, Patricia Lupoff enlightens curious fans.
.

David Lemmo, who had, the day before,
done a lecture/slideshow on Tarzan as Myth,
here, on Sunday, talks on 100 Years of Tarzan.
.

.

Tarzan Program question-and-answer session with the audience,
featuring Richard Lupoff, Tom Krabacher, John Pappas, David Lemmo, and Thomas Yeates.
.

.

Fans not acquainted with the novels of Edgar Rice Burroughs
were intrigued by the inter-genre aspect of the Tarzan myth.
Tarzan is not merely a jungle hero:
English Viscount, family man, secret agent, science fiction adventurer, paranormal investigator, RAF officer,
and immortal, the Ape-Man of the original stories of Edgar Rice Burroughs
is perfectly adaptable to the ongoing 21st Century modern mythological pantheon.
.

.

Many thanks to the Sacramento Central Library for hosting our event,
and especially to Sacramento Room Technician
Tom Tolley, who made it possible.
