TARZAN - FROM MAGAZINE TO MOVIE *
Edgar Rice Burroughs began writing Tarzan of the Apes at 8 pm, December 1, 1911. The work was completed at 10:25 pm, May 14 of the following year. On June 11 he submitted the manuscript to All-Story magazine; June 26 he received $700 for it. Tarzan was published complete in the October issue with illustrations by Clinton Pettee. On October 5 Burroughs submitted the story to A. C. McClurg & Co. for publication as a book; they declined. November 3 he submitted it to The Bobbs-Merrill Co., Reilly & Britton, and Dodd, Mead and Co. -- none would accept it. Between January 6 and February 27 of 1913 the Evening World Daily Magazine published an extremely popular serialization of the novel. May 23 Rand McNally turned it down. The following year, May 1, 1914, A. C. McClurg & Co. asked for the publication rights. It was released June 17 with the famous silhouette by Fred J. Arting on the dustjacket, $1.30 for the first edition with later reprints at 50 cents.
Burroughs had been exploring film production for Tarzan of the Apes ever since 1913 when a New York play broker had suggested it. After many rejections, he signed a personal contract with Chicago insurance salesman Bill Parsons, June 6, 1916, granting him the film rights for $5,000 in advance on royalties, plus $50,000 in common stock in the company Parsons would form to raise the money needed for production. By the end of the year Burroughs was Director General of Parsons' National Film Corporation of America.

"Chattering From the Shoulder #20 by Nkima: Savage Pellucidar: Part 2" ERBzine 0453, 9-22-00The story continues in Edgar Rice Burroughs Weird Worlds from DC comics. The Pellucidar story ran in this series for 7 issues from Sept, 1972 to Sept, 1973. Each contains both a Pellucidar and Barsoom story which continues to the next issue. The first 3 were written by Len Wein with art by Alan Lee Weiss. Issue #4 was written by Danny O'Neil with art by Michael Wm Kaluta. The remaining issues were also written by Danny O'Neil but the Artist was Dan Green. These continue the adaptations of the first two books which began in Korak #46 (see above) and follow the original story almost perfectly, even so, the story seems poorly developed and lacks suspense. Check out Bill Hillman's Weird Worlds cover gallery. With issue #60 of Korak in 11-12-75, the title changed to Tarzan Family Giant. This comic contains Tarzan: Escape from Pellucidar. Issue #66 in 11-12-76, again as Tarzan Family Giant, has the story Pellucidar: The Amulet, the Power, and the Hero. Marvel's Tarzan Lord of the Jungle ran a story called Tarzan: Blood Money and Human Bondage which took the apeman to Pellucidar in issues #17-22 (Oct 78 to Mar 79). The comics were by Buscema & Janson. Check out Bill Hillman's Comics Gallery for more cover pictures.
