Frontis. by J. Allen St. John. Light green cloth lettered in black, jacket. Fairly early Grosset & Dunlap reprint, with one page of ads at rear listing 11 ERB titles; in later issues, the frontispiece was not included. Heins M3.3; Zeuschner 831. Jacket with pieces missing from top right corner of front panel and spine foot, some extremity chipping and other wear, tape repairs on verso; a little extremity rubbing to the volume, leaning a trifle; ink name to front pastedown, else very good in good jacket.

Swords of Mars ~ ERB, Inc.
Illus. with 5 plates by J. Allen St. John. Blue cloth lettered in orange, jacket. First Edition. Presentation copy inscribed by Burroughs on the front free endpaper, "To Edward H. Gilbert, Best always, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Tarzana, Jan. 21, 1936." Florence Gilbert Burroughs, Ed Gilbert's sister, has also in inscribed the book, on the half-title, "A secret code - yours to find  - a message herein lies - Good luck, Florence Gilbert Burroughs." The now-famous secret code is that the first letter of each chapter spells out "TO FLORENCE WITH ALL MY LOVE ED." John Carter's Princess yet again needs rescuing, this time on Mars' nearer moon,  Thuria.  The jacket is in the laminated state.
Heins M8.1; Zeuschner 501. Jacket with some fading to the spin, chip at foot and slight wear at head, verso tape repairs at those places; volume with a little rubbing to spine ends, light offset to endpapers, near fine in very good to nearly fine jacket.

Synthetic Men of Mars ~ ERB, Inc.
Illus. with 5 plates by John Coleman Burroughs. Blue cloth lettered in orange, 2 states of the jacket. First Edition. Presentation copy inscribed by Burroughs to his brother-in-law on the front free endpaper, "To Eddie Gilbert, with all good wishes, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Tarzana, February 28, 1940."  There is a printed label affixed to the front pastedown, "This Book is the first bound copy. This copy has two dust jackets, the regular jacket, laminated, which came with the book, and a special pre-publication promotional jacket, unlaminated, described by Heins: "In the advertising campaign for this book, dealers and book buyers were sent loose jackets which bore printed promotional material on the reverse side. Some of these pre-publication jackets found their way into copies of the book, sooner or later." Zeuschner merely notes two states of the jacket, laminated and unlaminated. Vor Daj and the Warlord struggle against a Frankenstein-like synthetic being. Heins M9.1; Zeuschner 511. The regular state of the jacket with some darkening to the spine, worn at ends, tape repairs on verso, some wear to the top panel edges, else near fine; the promotional jacket is fine, unblemished; volume spine ends a little darkened with some wear, light offset to the endpapers, else near fine.

Llana faces numerous perils with the help of her grandfather, John Carter. Heins M11.1; Zeuschner 280.  Fine in fine jacket.

This copy is "one of the few survivors of a near-disastrous fire that occurred in our store-room on Saturday, May 3, 1958. The fire started as a result of the spontaneous combustion of old Tarzan motion pictures printed on nitrate film...," with printed label to that effect mounted on the front pastedown. Llana faces numerous perils with the help of her grandfather, John Carter. Heins M11.1; Zeuschner 280. The book and jacket are both in fine condition, showing no ill effects from the fire.

John Carter of Mars ~ Canaveral

Illus. by Reed Crandall. Blue cloth lettered in black on front cover and spine, jacket. First Edition, First Issue (binding). First issue binding with title on cover incorrectly reading "John Carter and the Giant of  Mars." That novelette was just one of the two stories in the book, the other being Skeleton Men of Jupiter. The title is correct on the dust jacket. Zeuschner 198. Jacket with light rubbing along joints; fine in near fine jacket.


Back to the Stone Age ~ ERB, Inc.
Illus. with 7 plates by John Coleman Burroughs. Blue cloth lettered in orange, jacket. First Edition. In the prehistoric world of the eternal sun, adventurer Lt. Wilhelm von Horst discovers love. The original dust jacket is laminated without a ripple effect (there were also laminated jackets with a ripple-like effect, and unlaminated jackets.) It is likely one of those found uncirculated in the Burroughs archives, as it exhibits no wear. Heins P5.1; Zeuschner 25. Volume spine darkened a little, head worn, foot rubbed, light soilmarks to rear cover; slight darkening to the endpapers, else very good in fine jacket.

Land of Terror ~ ERB, Inc.

Blue cloth lettered in red, jacket designed by John Coleman Burroughs. First Edition.
Emperor David Innes encounters numerous bizarre and mysterious tribes in this adventure story. Heins P6.1; Zeuschner 240.

Jacket with a few tears repaired with tape on the verso, slight chips to spine ends, split along front fold; a few slight scratches to the covers, spine faded a bit; else near fine in very good jacket.

Blue cloth lettered in red, jacket designed by John Coleman Burroughs. First Edition. This copy is "one of the few survivors of a near-disastrous fire that occurred in our store-room on Saturday, May 3, 1958. Emperor David Innes encounters numerous bizarre and mysterious tribes in this adventure story. Heins P6.1; Zeuschner 240. Despite the admonition of the label, there is no evidence of fire damage, or indeed of other wear. Fine in fine jacket.

The jacket is inscribed and signed by Hulbert Burroughs on the rear panel, next to the photo portrait of Edgar Rice Burroughs which he had taken, "To Ed Gilbert, Master Collector, from Hully Burroughs." First of the Canaveral printings of Burroughs' stories not previously published in book form. The illustrations are those done by J. Allen St. John for the magazine appearances in the 1940s. Heins P7.1; Zeuschner 472. Fine in fine jacket.


Pirates of Venus ~ ERB, Inc.
Illus. with 5 plates by J. Allen St. John. Blue cloth lettered in red, jacket. First Edition. Inscribed and signed twice by Burroughs, both times on the front free endpaper, "To Robert Laverty, with best wishes, Edgar Rice Burroughs, and then Aug. 12, '39, To Edward Henry Gilbert, with many happy returns of the day, Edgar Rice Burroughs." This is the first of the Venus series from ERB, in which Carson Napier adventures to Venus, where he meets the stunning Princess Duare. The jacket is evidently one found uncirculated in the Burroughs' archives, with no wear. Heins V1.1; Zeuschner 406. Volume spine darkened, slight extremity rubbing; some offset to the endpapers, else very good in fine jacket.

Illus. with 6 plates by John Coleman Burroughs. Blue cloth lettered in red, 2 states of the
dust jacket. First Edition. Inscribed by Burroughs to his brother-in-law on the front free endpaper, "To Edward Gilbert, with all good wishes, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Tarzana, California, February 10, 1939." The book is dedicated by Burroughs to his wife, and she in turn has  inscribed it on the dedication-page to her brother, "For Eddie Gilbert, Eddie Burroughs' greatest devotee - from a [?] devotee of [?], Florence Gilbert Burroughs." Carson and Duare fly in the premier airplane flight over Venus, and encounter many  troubles along the way. With two states of the vibrant color pictorial dust jacket designed by John Coleman Burroughs:  laminated and unlaminated. Heins V3.1; Zeuschner 70. Laminated jacket with some darkening to spine, wear at ends, corners and top edge, light stains at spine ends, very good or better; unlaminated jacket without wear, evidently one found uncirculated in the Burroughs' archives, fine condition; volume with slight darkening to spine ends, else near fine.

Carson of Venus ~ ERB, Inc.
Illus. with 6 plates by John Coleman Burroughs. Blue cloth lettered in red, 2 states of the dust jacket. First Edition.Inscribed on the dedication page by the dedicatee, Florence Gilbert Burroughs', ERB's wife at the time he wrote the book, to her brother Ed Gilbert: "For Eddie, All my love always, Florence Gilbert Burroughs." Also inscribed on the half-title by ERB's grandson, "To Eddie a truly great man, you've known generations of my family and even dated my mother, warmest personal regards, Danton Burroughs, 4-7-90," and on the same page, "Dear Eddie, You are a man whose friendship I will always cherish, my very best, John F. McGoigan, April 7, 1990, L.A." McGoigan is the publisher of Tarzine, a fanzine for Burroughs buffs. Carson and Duare fly in the premier airplane flight over Venus, and encounter many troubles along the way. Heins V3.1; Zeuschner 70. Jacket with a little wear at the spine ends, else fine in near fine jacket.

Escape on Venus ~ ERB, Inc.

After endless struggles to escape imprisonment, Carson and Duare at last find their home and peace. Heins V4.1; Zeuschner 126. Some darkening/light soiling to the jacket, some wear to the ends; near fine in very good jacket.


The Eternal Lover ~ Grosset & Dunlap
Frontis. by J. Allen St. John. Red cloth lettered in black, jacket. Bizarre twists in time bring together unlikely lovers: a stone age cave man and a modern woman. This is the earliest Grosset & Dunlap reprinting, according to Zeuschner, with 15 Burroughs titles listed in the advertisement at rear. Heins X8.2; Zeuschner 139. Jacket with a few extremity chips and edge tears, crease to lower front panel, several tape repairs on verso; some soiling and light staining to the covers, leaning a little, else very good in like jacket.

The War Chief ~ Methuen

Red cloth decorated and lettered in black, facsimile of the original color pictorial jacket. First British Edition. Inscribed by Burroughs on the front free endpaper to his future brother-in-law, "To Eddie  Gilbert, from his good friend, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Tarzana, Aug. 21, 1928." Historically accurate novel of the Apache war with the white man in the Southwest, reflecting Burroughs' respect for the Apaches gained when he was a young man with the 7th U.S. Cavalry in Arizona in 1896-1897. Heins X12.3.1. Slight fading to the covers, a little soiling to the covers, top corner of front cover bumped; light offset to the endpapers, else very good.


Jungle Girl ~ ERB, Inc.
 Illus. with 6 plates by Studley O. Burroughs. Blue cloth lettered in red, jacket. First Edition. Inscribed and signed by Burroughs on the front free endpaper, "To Eddie Gilbert, with best wishes, Edgar Rice Burroughs." An American explorer goes to Cambodia, where he finds an ancient civilation thriving deep in the jungle. This is the second book published by Burroughs at his own publishing company. Heins X15.1; Zeuschner 206. The original dust jacket with streaky darkening to spine, light soiling, several short tears, tape repairs on verso; fading to the volume spine, offset to the endpapers, else near fine in very good jacket.

Apache Devil ~ McClurg
Blue cloth lettered in red, jacket. First Edition. Inscribed by Edgar Rice Burroughs' wife to her brother on the front free endpaper, "For my first "son," my little brother - Florence Gilbert Burroughs." The inscription brackets her bookplate as Florence Gilbert Dearholt, and on the front pastedown is her bookplate as Florence Gilbert Burroughs. Believing himself to be a full-blooded Apache, Shoz-Dijiji struggles to be loved by a white woman. Heins X16.1; Zeuschner 2. The dust jacket, an original, is evidently one which was uncirculated and discovered later in the Burroughs' archives. It is in fine condition. The volume spine darkened, ends wearing, some soiling and stains to the covers; light offset to endapers, else very good in fine jacket.

The Oakdale Affair - The Rider ~ ERB, Inc.

Illus. with 2 plates, incl. frontis., by John Coleman Burroughs. Blue cloth lettered in red, jacket. First Edition. Inscribed and signed by Burroughs on the front free endpaper, "To Ed Gilbert, Long may he wave! Edgar Rice Burroughs, Tarzana, June 10, 1937." The two stories, which appeared The Blue Book Magazine and All-Story Weekly in 1918, are  entirely unrelated. This is the first book illustrationed by Burroughs' younger son. Heins X17.1; Zeuschner 373. The original dust jacket is laminated, as issued, and the lamination has bubbled a bit on the  rear panel, the spine is a little faded with minor wear at ends; the volume is fine and bright, in very good or better jacket.


The Lad and the Lion ~ ERB, Inc.
Illus. with 5 plates by John Coleman Burroughs. Blue cloth lettered in red, 2 states of the original jacket, laminated and not laminated. First Edition. Inscribed by Burroughs to his brother-in-law on the front free endpaper, "To Edward Gilbert, with best wishes, Ed, Tarzana, Feb. 14, 1938." According to Zeuschner, the book was published on February 15, 1938. A royal lad and an adult lion romp in the desert. With both the laminated and unlaminated states of the original color pictorial dust jacket. Heins X19.1; Zeuschner 235. The laminated example of the jacket has a few tears and other wear, spine a little darkened, tape repairs on the verso, very good; the unlaminated jacket exhibits no wear, evidently one discovered uncirculated in the Burroughs archives, fine condition; the volume with a little rubbing to the spine ends, near fine, bright.

The Deputy Sheriff of Comanche County ~ ERB, Inc.
Illus. with a frontispiece & chapter headings by John Coleman Burroughs. Gray cloth lettered in red, 2 states of the original jacket, laminated and not laminated. First Edition. Rancher Buck Mason tries to prove himself innocent after the murder of an old enemy. This copy with both the laminated and unlaminated states of the jacket; the laminated is generally accepted as being the earlier state. Heins X21.1; Zeuschner 110. The laminated example of the jacket has a bit of wear at the spine ends, tape repairs on the verso, near fine; the unlaminated jacket exhibits no wear, evidently one discovered uncirculated in the Burroughs archives, fine condition; the volume with a little rubbing to the spine ends, leaning a little, light offset to the endpapers, near fine.

Red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, jacket designed by Gilbert Kane. 1 of 3000 copies. First Hardcover Edition. Two stories, one of a savage Europe isolated from the Americas, the other about a lion who unwittingly aids justice. Beyond Thirty was first published separately two years earlier, anonymously by Lloyd Eschbach, a typed offset edition of 300 copies in red paper covers. Heins X23.1; Zeuschner 63. Some soiling to the jacket; volumes spine leaning slightly; near fine in very good jacket.

Inscribed and signed by Hulbert Burroughs on the rear jacket panel, beneath the photograph of his father, Edgar Rice Burroughs, which he took. I Am A Barbarian ~ ERB, Inc.

Frontis. by Jeff Jones. Maroon cloth lettered in gilt, jacket. First Edition. Written by Burroughs between April and September in 1941, this historical novel is set in the time of the Roman Empire. It was not published in any form before this book edition. Only 2000 copies were printed, and a number of those were destroyed in a fire in the Burroughs warehouse. Zeuschner 186. Fine in fine jacket.
