Brothers of the SpearFrom its beginning in 1948 Tarzan Dell comics featured a few pages of non-Tarzan material in the back pages of the magazine. This was made necessary by postal regulations. Starting in issue number 25 of October 1951 the Tarzan script writer, Gaylord DuBois, and the comics feature artist, Jesse Marsh, launched a serial that would run for the rest of the Dell/Gold Key Tarzan run: Brothers of the Spear.
The main characters were Dan-El and Natongo, deposed kings of Aba-Zulu and Tungelu, respectively. As the story progressed they regained their rightful titles and married the beautiful women, Tavane and Zulena, and had countless adventures along the way.
Artwork for this popular feature was taken over by Russ Manning in issue number 39 of December 1952 -- an assignment he held until the last Tarzan Gold Key in 1966.
