Politics is no place for this action hero

Thursday, October 2, 2003 ~ The Courier-Journal, Louisville, KentuckyWhile furiously trying to connect the dots from Arnold Schwarzenegger to the action heroes of my youth, my eyes fell upon a large postcard sent by the rare-book folks at the University of Louisville's Ekstrom Library touting -- in effect -- Tarzan.Now there was a Greenpeace candidate I could swing with.
I was thinking about Arnold -- if not Tarzan -- because Arnold now seems a cinch to become governor of a state where the political elephants are desperately trying to take charge. Apparently California Republicans are willing to swallow his moderate-to-liberal positions just to get his star-studded muscle into the top job.
And since Tarzan is about to enjoy his roughly 25th renewal, this time as a television star, it seemed as if Ekstrom Library was a logical place to plug into memories of my muscular candidate of choice.
THE CONNECTION was made through genial George T. McWhorter, curator of the library's Edgar Rice Burroughs Collection. Burroughs, for those of you born after the word Terminator wasn't automatically followed by a number, was the country's best-selling author circa 1900-1950. He wrote 76 books -- 26 of them about Tarzan, the protector of Jane and King of the Apes.
"Burroughs always described Tarzan in his books as being built more like Apollo than Hercules," McWhorter said. "Arnold is more the Hercules type."
McWhorter said Burroughs had a lifelong interest in genetics. He had created Tarzan to test his "noble savage" theory: Could an intelligent -- if nonverbal -- man with good bloodlines cope being abandoned in a jungle without a political consultant in sight?
Alas, Hollywood wasn't as kind to Burroughs as it was to Arnold. Burroughs was hired as consultant to the first Tarzan movie and quickly noticed the cameraman would just shoot anything that interested him -- and the script was adjusted accordingly.
"Burroughs just threw up his hands, sold all the movie rights and left," McWhorter said.
His Burroughs archive is astounding. It contains 100,000 movies, posters, magazines, photographs, letters, scrapbooks, signed first editions. It's all dedicated to McWhorter's mother -- who taught him to read at age 5 with Tarzan books. An exhibition of the memorabilia -- the largest institutional collection on Burroughs in the world -- will be open at the library through next month.
I read at least a dozen Tarzan books as a child. His kinder, gentler (although still hands-on) approach would still get my vote in any recall election. But those were very different days.
THE GOOD news is the current TV generation can get a bare-chested look at Tarzan on WB Sunday night.
A new show, cleverly titled "Tarzan," will star Calvin Klein underwear model Travis Fimmel as the apeman -- which should boost company loincloth sales considerably.
In the show, Tarzan is being held captive in New York's urban jungle by an evil uncle (Mitch Pileggi of X-Files fame) who wants to prevent Tarzan from claiming his rightful place as CEO of the fabulous Greystoke Industries. Sure, I can see Tarzan now, wearing his three-piece, sipping bottled water and dictating memos to the bean counters while poring over the profit-and-loss sheets.
But Tarzan escapes and falls for a police detective named Jane. Who else in New York might notice an almost mute, bare-chested guy wearing only his Calvin Kleins?
I have no idea where the show goes from there, but I'm hoping Tarzan never gets into politics.

By Edgar Rice BurroughsBurroughs is chiefly remembered, of course, as the creator of Tarzan--one of the twentieth century's most enduring pop culture icons, who spawned 26 Burroughs books, countless films, imitations, even an updated 2003 TV series starring a Calvin Klein underwear model. Yet before Burroughs introduced his vine-swinger to the world, he dreamed up Barsoom -- Mars to us Earthlings. One of the earliest, most popular imaginings of the Red Planet, Burroughs' Martian adventures inspired Ray Bradbury and Carl Sagan to explore similar themes of extraterrestrial life and conflict in their own works. Comprising eleven books in all, the first three collected in Under the Moons of Mars, the saga's hero is John Carter, a Civil War veteran teleported from an Arizona cave to Barsoom. There, he discovers a dying civilization devastated by drying water beds and constant warfare, where dwell four-armed barbarians, giant white gorillas, flesh-eating plant creatures and, of course, green men.
The series' first entry, A Princess of Mars, serialized in All-Story magazine in 1912, marked an auspicious debut for Burroughs. It was his first professional attempt at writing fiction of any kind and kick-started an enormously prolific career--later that same year, in fact, he sold his first Tarzan story (Tarzan of the Apes) for an impressive $700. That remarkable year was preceded by numerous disappointments, failures and setbacks. When Burroughs sat down to write A Princess of Mars he was a 36-year-old, virtually bankrupt father of two, who picked up a pulp magazine out of sheer boredom.
"If people were paid for writing rot such as I read in some of those magazines then I could write stories just as rotten," he once wrote of his Eureka moment. "I knew absolutely that I could write stories just as entertaining and probably a whole lot more so." Besides the Tarzan and Barsoom stories, other far-flung Burroughs realms would eventually include Pellucidar (beginning with At the Earth's Core), Amtor (a.k.a. Venus), the lost continent of Caprona (The Land That Time Forgot), the world beneath the Moon's surface (The Moon Maid) plus additional forays into SF, horror, westerns, even alternate history.
Born in Chicago in 1875, Burroughs enjoyed the early advantage of mandatory school courses in Greek and Latin, which provided a thorough foundation in Classical literature and mythology. The youngest of three boys, Edgar joined his brothers on an Idaho cattle ranch in 1891. When his Western sojourn became too rip-roaring for his parents' comfort, he was shipped off to military school, where he honed his skills as a trick rider and crack shot. This led to a stint in the U.S. Cavalry; though ready for action, Burroughs was eventually diagnosed with a heart murmur and was discharged in 1897. Over the next decade and a half, Edgar became a husband and father with indeterminate career goals: he'd served as a policeman, a clerk at Sears and a door-to-door peddler of a "cure" for alcoholism. During his unpromising job as pencil sharpener wholesaler, he realized his calling as a writer, submitting his first story under the pseudonym of Norman Bean.
In 1923, Burroughs founded Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc.--though commonplace today, it was then a reflection of what an international publishing phenomenon he'd become. He died in 1950 on his California ranch, Tarzana.

This alligator is well over 100 years old. It starred in the original Tarzan movie. He is now totally blind and you can see the holes in his jaws where they were wired shut to make the movie. Although he has no name, he is living quite happily in a small alligator farm in Lake City, Florida. |

Romania to Honor Tarzan Actor With Plaque

The late Olympic swimmer-turned-actor Johnny Weissmuller (news) was born in Romania, and local officials plan to reclaim him. A commemorative plaque will be placed on the house in Timisoara where he was born, a government representative told the daily Pro Sport.
Weissmuller, who died in 1984, played Tarzan in the movies during the 1930s and 1940s, after winning five gold medals at the 1924 and 1928 Olympics.His family emigrated to the United States when he was a child, but he claimed to have been born in Windber, Pa., an assertion his son has said may have been made to ensure a place on the U.S. Olympic swimming (news - web sites) team.
Romanian officials said in comments published Saturday that a ceremony will be held next year to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Weismuller's birth.His films included "Tarzan the Ape Man," "Tarzan Finds A Son!" and "Tarzan and the Amazons." Earlier this year, his character in "Tarzan the Ape Man" made the American Film Institute (news - web sites)'s list of all-time movie heroes at No. 34. That was one spot ahead of Gary Cooper (news)'s portrayal of Alvin York in "Sergeant York" and two ahead of John Wayne (news)'s Rooster Cogburn in "True Grit."

Peter Jonas Weissmüller was born on June 2, 1904 in what is now Romania but was in the year of his birth part of the Austro-Hungarian Habsburg empire. The boy who would later become a U.S. Olympic swimming champion and film star — and who would later falsely claim (for Olympic reasons) Windber, Pennsylvania as his birthplace — was the son of ethnic Austrians living in Banat, a region that, like neighboring Transylvania (Siebenbürgen in German), had been populated with Germanic settlers as early as the 13th century. As late as 1919, Banat's population was an ethnic mix of Romanians, Austrians, Serbs and Hungarians, with the German-speaking Austrians comprising 23 percent of the total, second only to the Romanians in number.Weissmuller was born in the tiny hamlet of Freidorf (“free village” in German) not far from Timisoara (Ger., Temeschburg). Even today the area around Timisoara is dotted with small towns bearing German names such as Gottlob, Johanisfeld and Liebling, reflecting the German ethnic influence on the region. Weissmuller's family left Banat for America in 1904, shortly after Johnny's birth, settling first in Pennsylvania, where many other Austrians and Germans lived (and where brother Peter was born in 1905), and later in Chicago, another Germanic stronghold and the home of Weissmuller's maternal grandparents. The original German family name Weissmüller translates literally as “white miller” or “wheat miller” (Weizen).
Johnny grew up in German-American communities, first in Pennsylvania and later in Chicago, where he attended parochial and public schools. Although studio publicity and some Weissmuller biographies claim he attended the University of Chicago, this is not true. Weissmuller was probably a high school dropout, leaving school no later than about the time his swimming career went into high gear (10th grade), if not sooner.
A spindly, almost skinny child (but not “sickly” as some bios state), Johnny took up swimming as a boy. At the age of 16 he began training with Illinois Athletic Club swimming coach Bill Bacharach, who helped Johnny reach his Olympic potential. Weissmuller went on to win five Olympic gold medals and many other world and national swimming titles. In 1922 he set a new world record by swimming 100 meters in less than a minute. He won his gold medals in the 1924 (Paris) and 1928 (Amsterdam) Olympics.

The night before he had known better than to take just one more swig of that warm plaintain beer, but the laughing Waziri had insisted and, like a fool, he had given in. Today his mouth tasted like a vulture`s crotch and his head throbbed like the drums of the Dum-Dum.
Jane would insist on being abducted on a morning like this. The silly goose. Well, he had had enough of dropping everything and racing off to rescue her. Wife or no, the next Arab slaver or great ape that made off with her could bloody well keep her.
Although it was early morning and he was high up above the ground, the air was already saturated with moisture and warm enough to be miserable. He was tired of always having the stink of stale sweat about him. Ever since he had spent those months in his London town house, the Ape-Man had often wished for a cool drizzly day in the gentle clime of England. The fishing would be good in the Highlands this time of year. Suddenly he longed for a bottle of Jergen Heidshak campagne chilled to just above freezing, perhaps with Alden strawberries in cream. The raw meat of Bara the deer had been tasting rather stringy and sour of late.
With a shocking suddenness, the Ape-Man was jolted out of his thoughts. There in a clearing below, his Jane was struggling in the grip of a huge muscular native. The leopard skin loincloth and spotted tattoos identified the man. Yes, it was Jujube, chief of the Leopard Cult in this area. He had one powerful arm around Jane, while the other tore at the front of her blouse, exposing her proud splendid breasts to full view. The Ape-Man noted with satisfaction that she was putting up a determined fight. He had half thought she was getting to fancy these kidnappings.
Before the grim Apeman could strike, the branch beneath him gave way with a vicious snapping noise and he fell full on his head directly in front of the startled Jujube and his wife. As had happened so many times before, he was knocked senseless and he regained awareness to find himself sitting up, bound tightly with strips of animal hide.
Still clutching the frenzied Jane in his arms, Jujube grinned wickedly. "I`ve been expecting you, Lord Greystoke," he said in perfectly acceptable English. "Your clumsy efforts at inflitrating our holy Leopard sect have become a positive nuisance. I must say I`m glad to finally rid ourselves of your interference."
Keep talking, you bastard, thought the Ape-Man as he felt something sharp on the ground beneath. Hr could hardly believe his fortune, but yes! There it was, right on the ground where Jujube might have flung it to be able to fondle Jane more readily. It was one of the fur gloves worn by the cult, complete with five scalpel-sharp leopard claws over the knuckles. As he furiously cut away his bonds behind his back, the Ape-Man played for time.
"Someone`s behind you, Jujube. You haven`t the brains to organize a movement like this. Who is it? The Russians?" As he had hoped, that hit a sore spot. Jujube leaned closer and his indescribably foul breath washed over the Ape-Man. Living on a diet of nothing but leopard for their religious beliefs, the killers were notorious for halitosis
"No, Lord Greystoke, it is indeed ironic that you shall URK!" The word died in a hideous gurgle as the Ape-Man broke loose and plunged the claws into the man`s throat. Even as blood streamed from the torn flesh, the Apeman hoisted the huge native overhead and dashed him against a tree with force that dislodged two monkeys and a snake.
As Jane flung herself trembling into his arms, the Ape-Man saw with an almost physical shock how beautiful she was. He loved the way she wore her nails short, without polish, and didn`t fuss with her hair. "Oh, John my darling," she sobbed. "It was dreadful. He had the worst breath!"

In the ice of the North Pole area a huge hole could be clearly seen. Soon a similar hole was discovered in Venus. Russian Physicist Fedor Nevolin became famous after composing the theory of "New Physics". In other words, he explained the birth of the Earth in a different way. First our planet was a huge cold lump wandering in the Universe. Being influenced by the Sun and the Universe energy, it was heated up to lava state and then started cooling up. The crust covered the Earth. Meanwhile, the stuff under the crust continued boiling turning into gas, Nedelin believes. Gas expands when being heated. In the core of our planet hollow space aroused, and a part of gas went outside.Big gas throwing out took place in the North and South Poles. Deep big holes aroused there.
Nedelin is sure the Earth is absolutely hollow inside and can even have a small Sun there. The Sun energy penetrates there through the holes in the Poles and accumulates in the center. If onesupposes that the Earth is hollow inside and has its small Sun, there can be life as well. This idea was indirectly confirmed by the report on an American high rank military commander to the North Pole. In 1947 Vice-Admiral of the US Navy Richard Bird went for a research flight over the North Pole. Near the Pole he noticed an unusual spot colored in mixture of yellow, red and violet. On approaching the spot the pilot could see something like a mountain chain. Bird flew over it and saw (this was his first impression) a mirage v forests, rivers, meadows with animals resembling mammoths. He could also see weird flying machines and - a city with buildings built from rock crystal. He realized himself to be a second Columbus discovering a new continent! The air thermometer scale began lifting and stopped at +23 degrees Celsius. This was impossible for the North Pole. Radio for the connection with the air base did not work-Bird's wife who read his register for the flight, told that Vice-Admiral contacted the representatives of the underground civilization who overtook us for one thousand years of development. The inner planet surface residents resembled people in appearance, but were more beautiful and had the look of spirituality. They had no wars, they found new sources of energy which allowed to use vehicles engines, receive food and light from nothing. Those people told Bird they tried to contact the outer surface of the Earth residents, but all their attempts were rejected, their flying machines were shot. Finally they decided to assist human beings only when they will be on the brink of self-destruction. "Inner" Earth residents showed Bird all their civilization achievements and then escorted the pilot to the Pole hole to let him out to our outer word. On return home he discovered that the plane used the fuel for extra 2750 kilometers of flight- The authorities recommended Vice-Admiral never tell anybody about the world he saw and put him under strict control for the rest of his life.

Yet some scientists still make conclusions that inside our planet there might be huge cavities having the inner Sun, moderate climate, unique plants and animals, special civilization. Geologists and geophysics say: "People have the right to pursue dreams".Geography scholars explain the existence of the "hole" in the photo as a usual phenomenon: The photo was made on November 23. It is known that the North Pole has a black hole over it from September 22 to March 22, because of the polar night. The Sun is unable to lighten this area because of the equator axis incline!
Probably specialists in Geography are right. Yet, look at the photo. What is there inside the back spot from the polar night?Maybe it is a passage to the Earth core not explored by scientists?
What does science say?
We addressed the issue of the underground passages existence to the scholar. I doubt this theory,- said Doctor of Geology of Moscow State University, the Head of Museum for Earth Studies in the university Sergei Dubinin. v Cavities inside the Earth can be only at shallow depths. They arise as caves. Some of them are really big and long, up to several hundred kilometers. But caves cannot arise deeper than 3 or 5 kilometers. High pressure will close all cavities deeper than this level.

Trip to Earth Core: Myth or Reality?
The principle suggested by David Stevenson is an exact antithesis of volcano eruptionA New Zealand planetary scientist David Stevenson caused turmoil in the geological society as he offered to probe not the space but the core of the planet. According to Le Monde, the fantastic project is not yet thoroughly developed. "At first the idea was declared ridiculous, now it is said to be unfeasible. This is quite a progress!" Planetary scientist David Stevenson, who is working in Pasadena, is satisfied with the effect the suggestion produced. On May 15 the Nature journal published the suggestion of the scientist to send a probe in a bubble of molten iron to the Earth core.
The modest proposal drew attention of the geological society that is seldom shocked with revolutionary ideas. In fact, geologists never had an idea how they could penetrate into the core of the planet. The planetary scientist says that geologists traditionally consider the action too expensive or too difficult. David Stevenson started working at the California Institute of Technology in 1980. He adds: "The mode of thinking is quite different with those people who deal with space exploration: thanks to the competition between the West and the East, the sphere was substantially invested. That is why scientists dealing with space exploration treat ideas of this kind differently."
The scientist studying formation of the Solar system planets got inspired with this experiment when he developed a scenario of his own. The Core, a recently shown film about a scientific expedition to the core of the planet inspired the scientist for formulating an idea that had been captivating him within several years. The scientist tells that an agent from the Paramount film studio contacted him and asked to answer several questions concerning the film. "I said it would be interesting; in December I wrote an article on the subject just within a day." Further the calculations were made more exact, but the main idea concerning the project was already outlined. The proposal said: first it is necessary to cleave the Earth crust and pour 100,000 tons of molten metal into it; the metal will then deepen the tunnel and draw a probe or probes down to the core. The probe, the scientist thinks, would allow to take temperature, pressure and compositions reading; the information would be conveyed with the help of acoustic waves. Such an underground capsule would be able to reach the core of the planet within a week, as 99.99 percent of the work would be done with the help of Earth's attraction.
The principle suggested by David Stevenson is an exact antithesis of volcano euption that ejects lava streams to the surface. As lava is less thick than the environment, it goes up while Stevenson's metal bubble would submerge under the effect of an opposite phenomenon. The now popular theory says that the metal core of the Earth was formed thanks to this mechanism, but the scientist doesn-t think the idea is credible. The proposition of Stevenson causes much enthusiasm with the laity than with specialists who "are not that critical, but at the same time are not jumping with joy about the new idea that must be immediately carried out."
Is the idea feasible? The scientist admits that the first stage of the experiment (drilling of a deep tunnel in the Earth crust) is still the phase that is not thoroughly studied. David Stevenson doesn't hope that his modest proposal will be carried out in the nearest years. He says that this is just an outline of a concept that can be studied thoroughly in about ten years. May it be so that the scientist wants to join the list of great dreamers?

No Life on Mars Ever
Fantastic projects to inhabit Mars are not destined to become true
May 12, 2003Russian television channels have recently broadcast several programs about the USA and Russia working on manned flights to Mars. Serious scientists develop fantastic projects to create a biosphere on the red planet and to inhabit Mars with people. It deems that it never occurred to anyone that such projects can never be implemented.
Russian scientist Konstantin Tsiolkovsky conducted an extensive research to prove that various forms of reasonable life can exist in low-oxygen matter. Those forms of life can be of a higher level in comparison with the human civilization. Kostantin Tsiolkovsky asserted that the Universe is controlled, that everything in the Universe is reasonable and rational, although people can hardly understand this. The great scientist's logic gives a reason to say that if there was a biological life on Mars, it was liquidated with the Supreme Space Mind for a good reason. It goes without saying that no one is allowed to correct actions and decisions of the Supreme Mind, which makes all ideas to reanimate Mars illusionary.
Dinosaurs became extinct on planet Earth 60 million years ago: the Supreme Mind believed that their further living on planet Earth was not expedient anymore. In addition to that, "cleansing procedures" took place on many occasions against humans too. This does not seem to be incidental at all. Everything that happens on Earth and in the Universe is based on the laws of the Supreme Mind.
It became known during the research of the red planet that certain space forces did not want to let people realize the secrets of Mars. The Soviet space station Phobos-2 approached Mars in January of 1989. On March 25th the station approached Mars's satellite Phobos and the connection with the Earth was lost soon after that. As the telemetry analysis showed later, the station started spinning in a chaotic way several minutes before the connection with the station was cut. The station managed to transfer a photograph, which was taken with an IR camera. The photo depicted a huge cigar-like object near Phobos, the satellite. According to calculations, the object was 20 kilometers long and about two or three kilometers in diameter. Some researchers did not pay considerable attention to that fact, whereas other scientists were shocked with it.
As it usually happens, officials told everyone, who took part in the program, to be quiet about it in order to avoid troubles. However, the information about the Mars sensation transpired in the press anyway. Later on, Soviet researchers came to conclusion that the cigar-like object was located on the stationary orbit in immediate proximity to Mars. On August 22, 1993 the American station Mars Observer achieved the Mars's orbit, but the connection with the Earth was lost just in three days for unknown reasons. The station was supposed to collect the information, which would then be used in the preparation of a manned mission to Mars. Moreover, the station was outfitted with the equipment to determine extraterrestrial beings on the surface of the red planet.
On the base of the two mentioned occasiaons, Soviet and American scientists came to conclusion that the two stations were either captured or destroyed. Such things took place during the research of Venus too. The goal of those intercepts is not clear still. Yet, it would be logical to assume that something or someone does not want people to learn their secrets. Some Russian space researchers do not doubt that there is a certain galactic presence within the framework of the Solar system. NASA specialists do not accept thispoint of view, basically. However, some of them start thinking that a piloted mission to Mars does not have any perspectives. The American government is not likely to claim the responsibility for such a risky undertaking, taking into consideration the fact that everyone knows what happened to Mars exploration stations. Both Russian and American scientists are drawn to believe that people do not play by their rules in space.
One of NASA major specialists Michael Wolf said that Russians are right to understand an opportunity of alien bases on Mars and Phobos. The scientist believes that UFOs that people can observe from time to time are used to control people's activities. Authorities have always tried to conceal the facts of UFO activity from the public eye, explaining such occasions with technical malfunctions or man-caused reasons. Michael Wolf believes that such a confession on the part of the American government would be premature at present.
This statement gives every reason to believe that high-ranking American officials realize that it is almost impossible and even dangerous to conceal certain facts about the exploration of Mars. However, one has to acknowledge the fact that the American space station Odyssey has been working on the Mars orbit very well. The station has even managed to discover a huge quantity of frozen water on the planet, which made NASA specialists get too much excited again. The discovery of ice on Mars entailed a fantastic project to make the planet another home for people. This seems to be rather naive. The fact that the space station transmits information about Mars on planet Earth does not bring any harm to more reasonable beings that live on Mars. In contrast to humans, they realize that the resumption of a biological life on Mars (if it ever existed there) is absolutely impossible, contrary to the Supreme Mind. That is why, one shall assume that "they" do not see any reason to get rid of the station.
