Prince Valiant Sunday Comic Strip
#1762 Original Art dated 11-15-70 (King Features Syndicate, 1970).
This is the only Sunday page
that Wally Wood drew while trying out for the job during the fall of 1970
when Hal Foster began talking
about retirement.
Wood jousted for this prestigious
job against artists Gray Morrow and John Cullen Murphy,
with Murphy ultimately winning
the permanent position.
Prior to this, Wood had parodied
Val in print several times,
beginning with "Prince Violent"
in Mad #13, published in July, 1954.
Sketches and a final coloured
panel
.
Wally Wood was a longtime admirer
of Hal Foster's Prince Valiant.
He had created a number of parodies
through the years.
A good example is the 8-page
parody he had done for MAD comics.
