The Barsoomian #14 – February 1968
You could almost
call this issue part 2 of issue #13. I was thrilled to have the cover
by Jeff Jones, even if it actually depicted Conan and not Tarzan.
I decided to play with some interior color and placed two really nice George
Schneider illustrations in blue on two ends of the same sheet. I
thought the contents page worked out very nicely. Both illustrations
were courtesy of Ken Webber, who contributed the back cover illustration,
as well as another cartoon of our mascot. Add to that a nifty depiction
of Tars Tarkas by Stan Taylor, donated by John Guidry; some Roy Krenkel
art, and sketches by Harry Habblitz.
The issue lead off with another installment of “Laugh
It Off!” columns from the Honolulu Advertiser and the Honolulu Star Bulletin,
originally published in 1941-42. Frank J. Brueckel provided a another
highly detailed article exploring a number of concepts relating to the
character of Julian in the trilogy of stories comprising The Moon Maid.
Going to the movies, Ken Dixon treated us to ERB films other than Tarzan,
very nicely illustrated with lobby cards provided by Stanleigh Vinson.
(Unfortunately, my printer didn’t do the greatest of reproducing them.)
Darrell C. Richardson’s short article covers a bit of fannish history in
addition to describing the Spanish Tarzan books published in the early
‘30s in Argentina. Darrell gave a humorous talk about these at the
1965 Dum-Dum in Chicago and had the audience stitches. Finally, Don
Reynolds takes yet another stab at a popular question: how did Tarzan get
his name.
