The Los Angeles SubERBS chapter of the Burroughs Bibliophiles staged an Edgar Rice Burroughs exhibit at the Palm Springs Welwood Murray Memorial Library to promote Burroughs’ Golden Palm Star ceremony and the Edgar Rice Burroughs Chain of Friendship (ECOF) gathering (April 4-6, 2023.)Located in the heart of the historic downtown district, at 100 South Palm Canyon Drive, at the intersection with Tahquitz Canyon Way, the library opened on February 19, 1941, after Burroughs and wife Florence had departed Southern California for Hawaii. The library was designed by John Porter Clark, the city’s first resident architect, and constructed by local contractor Charles Chamberlin.
The library is named after Palm Springs pioneer Dr. Welwood Murray, who opened the Palm Springs Hotel in 1893; Murray’s son George donated the land for the library in 1938. The building does not house a lending library, but serves as an online research library for the Palm Springs Historical Society and a visitor services location for the Palm Springs Bureau of Transportation.
On February 10, 2023, Burroughs Bibliophiles Chairman of the Board Gary Buckingham joined “A Star for ERB” Planning Committee members Tim Clark, Scott Tracy Griffin, Ahmed Khocht, Rob Olsen, and Lisa Gordon Wither to assemble the exhibit in the library’s glass-fronted display cabinets (Committee members Christopher and Pat Olsen were unable to attend).
Two cabinets were devoted to reproduction film stills and posters; the other cabinets housed books, toys, apparel, and assorted memorabilia. Interpretive text provided a brief biography of Burroughs, discussed his time in Palm Springs, and listed his novels, the Tarzan films, and the actors who portrayed the ape man onscreen. Ahmed Khocht’s ECOF promotional poster was displayed to provide information on the ECOF to library visitors.
Burroughs’ Golden Palm Star on the Palm Springs Walk of the Stars was unveiled at 11 a.m., April 4, 2023; an open house was held at the library from 2-4 p.m. to welcome ECOF attendees. The United States Post Office established a pop-up branch in the library lobby to provide commemorative postal cancellations, arranged by Burroughs Bulletin editor Henry G. Franke III.
Our deepest gratitude goes to Julie Warren and the Palm Springs Public Library for providing this venue to the Burroughs Bibliophiles free of charge.
