JOHN MARTIN THE POET

THE BALLAD OF ED BURROUGHS
(To the tune of "The Ballad of Jed Clampett"
-----
Come, listen to a story 'bout a man named Ed,
Strugglin' for new ways to keep his family fed,
And then one day while sittin' in a room,
He started on a story 'bout a guy on Barsoom
(John Carter, green men, a pretty girl)
- - - - -
Well the next thing you know the cash is rollin' in,
So Ed thinks he'd better get to writin' once again,
He writes about a baby who's adopted by an ape,
The people buy and read it with their kissers agape.
(Tarzan, cannibals, a pretty girl)
- - - - -
From alleys in Chicago to beyond the farthest stars,
Everything from kalkars to the hungry dinosaurs,
A rocket ride to Venus and a Gypsy with a bear,
Bandits and Apaches and a regent with red hair.
(Manly men, villains, pretty girls)
- - - - -
By March 19 in '50 Ed had taken his last stroll,
No more would he be writin' 'bout the diggin' Iron Mole,
But all his stories are in print for everyone to read,
About the bold adventurers who ever took the lead.
(Strange places, constant danger, pretty girls).

A Paean for Paxton

So your feelings will not suffer hurt,
I'll warn, here's a spoiler alert:
I'm going to sum up the story
Of a Master Mind's dire laboratory.
...
Edgar Rice Burroughs would have us
Believe there's a Martian named Thavas
Who, for a wad from the rich,
Their brains to young bodies he'd switch.
...
A World War I captain named Paxton,
Had legs that someone used an ax on.
But nay, not an ax: but 'twas rockets
That severed his limbs from their sockets.
...
But thanks to his heavenly stars,
He was quickly transported to Mars,
Where he signed up for Thavas's class,
Who said, "You can just call me Ras."
...
But Ras said, "I'm not in the game
Of mouthing your extra-long name.
You need one that is much more narrow,
So henceforth I'll call you Vad Varo.”
...
He trained Vad in Meds 101,
So the Earth man could help him turn young.
On his new Martian legs in the lab,
Vad gaped at a babe on a slab.
...
He said to himself, "Mama Mia!"
While gazing on sweet Valla Dia;
But Ras Thavas wasn't so nice,
And would do anything for a price.
...
So when an old crone name of Xaxa
Had reached an old age where she lacked a
Shape that would match Lady Ga-Ga,
She demanded a body like Valla's.
...
Ras was quite willing to do it,
But Vad swore that he would pooh-pooh it.
And Valla was his biggest fan,
As he set out to thwart Xaxa's plan
...
Now I know many ears are now lending
To hear if there's a happy ending --
Well, Xaxa gets hers, and is buried,
And Varo and Dia get married.
...
